Efêmera

Tulipa Ruiz

https://youtu.be/7LgEIvaLAPs

Contemporary Brazilian pop
This song has lots of views on YouTube because it was featured in a FIFA video game?
It definitely sounds like a very agreeable accompaniment to rolling credits
Amateur video here shows scenes of Ipanema beach in Rio, with the Two Brothers mountain behind it
Lyrics describe things ephermeral
“like the passing of a Sunday afternoon”
The other end of Ipanema beach is a rock called Arpoador
It’s where a lot of surfers hang out (the rock creates some decent waves)
Every late afternoon (and especially on weekends), cariocas sit on the rock, watch the light disappear behind the Two Brothers, and applaud the sunset
Just a rousing ovation for the sun
Tulipa (tulip) says any time she uses foul language, her mom gives her a stern look and reminds her she can’t curse cuz she’s named after a flower
Her most recent work features Adan Jodoroesky, son of Alejandro the director
Which is just an excuse to mention the batshit crazy story of Jodorowsky’s failed attempt to make Dune

In other failed Dune stories, Dave Matthews (not that one) made a fusion album based on the book in 1977
But the label (Creed Taylor’s CTI) never got authorization from Herbert, so the author sued
He won and CTI had to delete the album from its catalogue
It’s pretty cool, though (whether it captures the essence of Dune I’ll leave to the critics)

Sandworms was used by The Large Professor for “The Mad Scientist”

Along with the Vincent Price laugh from Thriller
And the bass, backbeat, and drone from Hamilton Bohannon’s Save Their Souls

Coincidentally enough, the album this was supposed to appear on (“The LP” – get it?) was itself held up and never released on Geffen
Mad Scientist dropped as a single in 96
But the album was held up in business and sample drama
It wasn’t officially released until 13 years later
Happy Bar Mitzvah!
