I’m Still In Love With You Girl

Today’s dose should really be direct-to-web
Since it’s my and Tati’s 13th anniversary
That’s right, we got married on July 7, 2007
07/07/07
This accomplished three strategic objectives:
One, it ensured it would be very hard for my notoriously scattered brain to forget our anniversary day
Two, it forestalled any possible confusion between the date notation Brazil — and the rest of the world — uses and the frankly stupid American custom of Month/Date/Year
Three, triple 7’s: gotta be lucky, right?
Well, our matrimony has reached bar mitzvah age and…we still here, baby!
In its honor, the 1967 Studio One single from Alton Ellis, who would become recognized as the Godfather of Rocksteady
One tale that gets passed around is that rocksteady was invented when the bassist was a no-show for a studio session and Ellis had Jackie Mittoo sit in instead
Master organist, but a novice on bass, he had a hard time keeping up with the ska and R&B rhythms
So they slowed it down for him, and *ba-da*… new genre!
Of course the true history of its emergence (and then evolution into reggae) is far more complex, but hey, it’s a great origin story
Happy anniversary, gatinha!
Still in love with you, girl…
