Salt & Pepper

Inspired by the premier of the Bulls doc
Salt & Pepper was a band formed in the late 60s, by Toni Nardi and Eddie Mobley, so named because one was white and the other black
This was, clearly, unusual in 1969
But makes more sense when you learn that the duo were serving together in the military
They were stationed in Bangkok and actually out their 45s on a label series called, simply, “Thai”
Their “northern soul” stomper Man of My Word is a collectable on the scene
Side note: for a long time, I didn’t understand the term “northern soul” common in dj circles
It actually refers to northern England
Famous soul nights at clubs in Manchester and Wigan
But today’s dose comes from a lesser-known 45 of theirs
Came across this on YouTube and recognized the piano line
Took me a couple days to place it
But eventually realized it was the sample on Blah Blah Blah
1996
Senior year of high school
And, of course, the high water mark of the bulls’ dynasty

At least, I’m 98% sure it’s the piano sample
No credit is given, no sample cleared, and nothing about it on the internet
Blahzay Blahzay was a hip hop duo from Brooklyn, a throwback to the boombap years when puffy was taking things in a decidedly different different direction
PF Cuttin is the dj/producer
He was on the boards for a number of nice mid-late 90s beats
Rhymes are courtesy of MC Outloud
They had a hit with Danger
I remember being a bit confused when they came out (in 95, everyone was playing Danger)
Because there was also a hip hop group from Chicago called Blah Zae Blah
And I couldn’t figure out what the relation was (there was none)
Anyway, dope album that got heavy rotation in the Wilson residence on 57th St
When the Bulls were kings of the NBA (and UHigh champs of the ISL)
