More 70s Krautrock
I kid, I kid
Michael Nau is from Maryland
Fronted a couple different psych folk bands
Including Page France and Cotton Jones (originally “Cotton Jones Basket Ride” which was definitely the superior name)
Whitney McGraw was a member of both groups, providing vocals, keyboards, and…glockenspiel (sort of a metal xylophone)
The two formed Cotton Jones Basket Ride around the time they got married
In 2015, he started releasing stuff dolo
McGraw was still in the mix, just not on the marquee
His first single was Love Survive
Where the psych was still present (in the reverb) but dialed back in favor of more classic soul
Listen to the way the drums (perhaps wooden) are mic’d
And the hard hitting piano riff
Nau is singing and on guitar, and McGraw is on backup vocals
It was recorded in Vermont
And released on limited-edition clear vinyl
Both leading and backup vocals are pretty dreamy
You can see why he chose this as a lead single for his LP Mowing
Instantly infectious and engrossing
Retains plenty of warmth, even while being recorded in an apartment (he says he’s “not really a studio guy”)
He lives in Cumberland, MD
I google image searched it, and the pics of 19th century church steeples dipped in misty green mountains fit his music pretty well!
