They’re On Me

Furniture

More music I discovered looking up sought-after records
British new wave from the early 80s
Very into the upright bass here
Furniture was a London band from the post-punk/art-pop era
This is from their first EP, released in 1983
Title was “When the boom was on”
Which is lyric that kicks off the first joint
Bassist credited on They’re On Me is Goose Goodchild
A pseudonym, one assumes 😉
This EP has a couple more famous standouts
Esp Why Are We In Love, with its unusual clarinet (played by the singer’s brother)

Apparently they had a big hit in 1986 on a much bigger label with Brilliant Mind
Which still gets spins on BBC radio?
But I don’t know it (not overly familiar with Brit pop)
And it sounds a lot more run of the mill 80s electro pop
I much prefer the earlier material
With its grimy production value but more adventurous arrangements and earnest writing
“and I’ll wait till the bars open”
