Collector’s item due to super-limited pressing
Sold for some ungodly sum on Discogs
British jungle/drum and bass, with dub overtone
The 12″ is the rare piece, but the LP cover also deserves a glance in this moment
Album is “Shoot the Boss”
Monkey Mafia is brainchild of Jon Carter
Essex-born DJ
Dropped out of school and moved to London to dedicate himself to sound production and engineering
Linked up with Mark Jones, who founded the Wall of Sound label
Had a DJ gig at the same club where Fatboy Slim and Chemical Brothers were spinning
Developing the sound that came to be known as Big Beat
But Carter was more into dancehall and dub
His music didn’t blow up in the same way with the frat boy and Vegas partier set
Shoot the Boss is from 1998
Like more than a few club DJ’s, he eventually started having serious problems with tinnitus
And had to move away from the loud sets
He’s now moved more on the business side
To safeguard his eardrums and mental health
“Calling all patients…”
For the record, album closes with…a CREEDENCE cover!
Not exactly what you expect from 90s DnB
